WHAT WE DO

Homework Help
Community Service

The Community service club works on creating a school climate of accountability, productivity, and collaboration.  The main focus is to strengthen practices within the school community itself.

WICOR

WICOR provides daily study groups with a structure of note-taking and organization aimed at refining skills necessary for success in middle school, high school and college, and an arena for expanding the college-level entry skills of students underrepresented in higher education.  Success in AVID is measured by students’ success in high school and college academics.  The AVID (WICOR) curriculum includes Socratic seminar, Cornell note taking, time management, test-taking strategies with particular emphasis on the vocabulary and writing development through various modes of discourse.  AVID students receive individualized assistance from teachers and tutors, instructors and fellow students, and are provided with individualized academic counseling.  The purpose of the AVID (WICOR) curriculum is to encourage the development of  the academic and personal strength of students who have made a commitment to become actively involved in their own education.

Held daily and because homework does not always occur at home and with the perceived demand for higher academic performance, this after-school homework-assistance program serves as a mediated protective function for children at-risk for school failure, particularly for those who do not have structured after-school activities or those whose parents/guardians have limited English proficiency. All subject matter is addressed and support and supplies are provided for assignments, projects, etc. During the 2013-2014 year, Lakeside’s Coordinator decided to hire Student Aides whom are currently enrolled in High School. The purpose was to have staff closer to the ages of the participant not only in an effort to build a lasting rapport, but to mentor/give advice as to what they are currently experiencing at the high school level (e.g., academic rigor) in an effort to better prepare them for what is expected/required from them in their up-and-coming-future grades.
